Why Desktop Virtualization is a Bad Idea

Desktop FanDesktop virtualization is all the rage these days. Instead ofrunning applications and your favorite O/S from your desktop, your"desktop" runs in a VM on a server that is centrallymanaged by IT. Dozens of different desktops are crammed on to thisserver, and your desktop is streamed to the lightweight PC whenneeded. Several vendors (Citrix, VMware, even Sun) have products inthis space. Now, let's turn the clock back 12 years to 1996. The Macarena crazeis sweeping the nation, and a much-younger Larry Ellison is ravingabout how the network computer will change the computing landscape. All of your apps run on powerful, centrally managed servers (mostlySun servers running Oracle databases), and the network computerrenders the results in a browser. Wait a minute, doesn't that soundfamiliar? Now let's rewind another 9 years to 1987. U2 and Madonna aretopping the charts, and X11 is all the rage in the computing scene.(Okay, two out of three are still around and thriving.) Everystudent developer and every corporate developer has the latest XWindows terminal with a fancy windowing system and applicationsthat run on more powerful servers. As Yogi Berra would say,"It's déjà vu all over again." Here's why desktop virtualization is a bad idea in this day andage: The desktop is much cheaper than the server. I can go to my nearestFry's or Best Buy and buy a dual-core laptop with 2 GB RAM for$500-$600. Desktop hardware is a commodity, whereas servers arestill pricey. Have you priced a 4-socket server with 32 GB RAMlately? And add in the price for your favorite hypervisor. Yourfavorite server vendor still has to pay for their kids' bracessomehow. As a developer and as an end user, I like to install stuff on mydesktop/laptop: iTunes, Yahoo IM, Apache, Eclipse, you get thepicture. My former VP of HR wanted to actually regulate the IMclient used by everyone in the company. Now, he was anex-paratrooper who's now retired to become a surf bum. Go figure. But I'm glad we didn't standardize on IM clients. And how about unplugging your laptop and working from your patio,or your dining room, or your sofa during an NBA playoffs game? I'vegot 802.11g at home, but 54 Mbps is still way too slow to stream mydesktop (or any apps) from my corporate server over VPN. Now don't get me wrong. I'm a big fan of virtualization. VM's aregreat to have on your desktop so that you can run Linux instanceson your Windows box. You can develop and test your app from thecomfort of your living room. Virtual desktops on the other hand, ain't such a hit in my book.
Ccfl BacklightHSINCHU, Taiwan, June 9, 2008 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-FirstCall viaCOMTEX/ ----AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX:2409; NYSE: AUO) today unveiled the world's thinnest* 13.3-inchTFT-LCD, the world's lightest* 46-inch TFT-LCD with CCFL backlight, and the world's most power-saving 10.2-inch TFT-LCD. These new,leading-edge green technologies are designed to meet the growingworldwide demand for energy-saving 3C products. AUO will showcaseits latest green technologies at Display Taiwan 2008 (June 11-13 inTaipei, Taiwan), together with its novel free form technology andin-cell multi-touch TFT-LCDs. AUO continues to pave the way for thefuture FPD industry through its green innovations and solutions. With AUO's exhibition theme of "Experience the Innovation" atDisplay Taiwan 2008, Dr. LJ Chen, AUO's President and COO, noted,"We have recently announced many exciting technical advances todemonstrate our unflagging efforts under four major domains ofgreen innovations, including Energy Saving, Material Saving,Environment Friendly and Lean Design. Our implementation of fulllevel eco-designs provides clients and consumers withnext-generation green displays. Furthermore, AUO will continue toleverage its innovations in making users better enjoy digital life, with multi-touch technology, curved displays, and free formtechnology. AUO strives to make LCDs with unlimited possibilitiesto be applied everywhere." In addition to the latest ultra slim and energy-saving TFT-LCDs forTV applications, AUO debuted the world's lightest* 46-inch LCD TVmodule with CCFL backlight. The thickness of AUO 46" ultra lightLCD TV module is a significant reduction of almost 40%, with itsweight cut by over 30% comparing to conventional models, fulfillingthe stylish design trends and wall-mount requirements forlarge-sized TVs. AUO has been developing a series of lightweightTFT-LCDs which can save the usage of steel and yet maintain thesame mechanical strength and optical performance. By saving onmaterial and transportation costs, the lightweight innovation isalso reducing the impact on the environment. AUO is also showcasing at Display Taiwan 2008 the world's thinnest*13.3-inch TFT-LCD for NB applications. With polish techniques andmaterial replacements, AUO has successfully developed this whiteLED Notebook PC panel with a thickness of merely 1.9mm(approximately equivalent to a U.S. five-cent coin) and a weight ofjust 138 grams. This ultra thin, extra light NB panel maintains 300nits of high brightness and a 500:1 high contrast ratio. For power efficiency, AUO has developed a single chip 10.2-inchTFT-LCD with only one source IC on chip and embedded gate ICfunction in array process. Comparing to traditional 10.2-inchpanel, which have 3 source ICs and 1 gate IC on chip, AUO's10.2-inch TFT-LCD with GOA (Gate on Array) technology saves almost50% of the IC costs, but still retains the same performance andgives up to 60% savings in terms of power consumption. To meet the dominating design trends of the human interface in theCE market, AUO is debuting the world's first* 8-inch charge-sensingin-cell multi-touch LCD at Display Taiwan 2008. Unlike touch panelscurrently in the market, AUO's in-cell multi-touch TFT-LCDintegrates touch function features into the TFT manufacturingprocess without adding an additional glass. In addition, AUO isdemonstrating two different types of its in-cell multi-touchtechnology through 4.3-inch applications. The voltage-sensing typemulti-touch technology, available with either stylus input or nailinput, can provide better optical performance and anti-glarefeatures with up to 8 point coordinates. The charge-sensing type ismore similar to projected capacitive touch panels, offeringpressure-less finger input as well as multi-touch gesture inputrecognition, which make it a perfect solution for highlyinteractive applications. As the consumer demands for style are also increasing, in additionto curved display technology, AUO has successfully developed anelliptic shaped LCD display with display sizes of 54mm (height) x41mm (width). The elliptic shaped screen is ideal for mobile phoneswhich require ergonomic designs. The novel shape can also beapplied to various handheld devices with compact, space-savingrequirements. The free form displays can bring more flexibility andinnovation to product designs. In addition to the outlook designadvantage, the free-shaped LCDs can also improve the spaceefficiency of the display area and further reduce the materialsused in the manufacturing process. AUO is also revealing other technologies at Display Taiwan 2008, aslisted below: Pictures for the above news release can be downloaded from AUOcorporate website URL:http://auo.com/auoDEV/pressroom.php?sec=Photosetls=en Any use of photographs must cite the source thereof is from AUOptronics Corporation * Based on available market research information as of June 9,2008.
Cauliflower waste boosts fiber in expanded snacks

fiber et functional By-products from cauliflower are a rich source of dietary fiber and proteins and when added at certain levels to cereal basedexpanded snacks, do not spoil the taste, according to researchpublished in the Journal of Food Engineering. Cauliflower also has antioxidant and anticarcinogenic propertiesand is "inexpensive" to use because it has a high waste index, the researchers fromManchester Metropolitan University in the UK and GaziantepUniversity, Turkey said. The USA is ranked sixth in the world for cauliflower production, generating an estimated 335,530 metric tons, worth almost$76million, according to UN figures for 2005. Professor Paul Ainsworth, director of the Manchester Food ResearchCentre, told FoodNavigator-USA.com: "Whenever you buy cauliflower from the supermarkets they are alwaystrimmed. You are probably using nearly 50 percent. "The outer leaves are removed which go to waste. We are trying toutilize the waste and minimize landfill." Prof. Ainsworth added that they were also looking at usingcauliflower in bread to boost the fiber content, again with goodresults. However he said this changed the color so it looked morelike wholemeal rather than white bread. Interest in dietary fiber has been increasing with scientificstudies linking increased intake to reduced risks of cancers suchas colorectal, and cardiovascular disease. As such, there is atrend to find new sources of dietary fiber as functionalingredients. Despite the mounting evidence for the benefits of dietary fiber, asurvey by Columbia University showed the average intake in the USwas about 12.5 grams a day, well short of the 32 grams of fiber perday recommended by the US National Fiber Council. The study is reportedly the first to use cauliflower by-products inready-to-eat snacks. The researchers used cauliflower with someflorets, curd, stem and leaves that were washed thoroughly and thenground. The dried sample was then milled and wheat flour wasreplaced with the dry cauliflower at levels of 5, 10, 15 and 20percent. In terms of the influence of cauliflower levels on taste, a sensorytest panel indicated that it could be incorporated into aready-to-eat snack up to a level of 10 percent. Although thereport added that improving the flavor of the end product was stillin progress as the taste was considered too strong at levels above10 percent cauliflower addition. The fiber content of extruded products without cauliflower was 5.6percent but that increased to 8.3 percent when the productcontained 10 percent cauliflower. The figures for protein increased from 6.3 per cent without cauliflower to 19 per centwith 10 percent. A number of researchers have already looked at the value of fruitsand vegetable by-products such as apple, pear, orange, peach, blackcurrant, cherry, artichoke, asparagus, onion and carrot pomaceas sources of dietary fiber supplements in refined food. And a recent report by Finnish researchers found that proteinsisolated from the potato, obtained as processing waste from thepotato industry, may be biologically active and capable of reducingblood pressure, as well as having antioxidant activity.

Hinde, the Market's bushy-bearded busker, died in his sleep Monday. He was 56. A Vietnam veteran with post-traumatic stress, he turned to writingand performing music to ease his pain. "He loved the Market. It really helped him deal with a lot of hisdemons, playing music, writing the lyrics," said his daughter,Katie Hinde. "It gave him a feeling that he was doing somethingworthwhile and meaningful, and it supported his family. "He was so heartbroken when we went to war in Iraq . He felt hisgeneration was destroyed by the Vietnam War. He thought, if welearned that lesson, then it was worth it," she said. "The current activity broke his heart; he felt like the lessonhadn't been learned at all." Jim Hinde grew up in Sandusky, Ohio. He played football in highschool. After graduating, he joined the Navy during the Vietnam War,serving as a radio and electronic technician on the USS Thomaston. "When he got back from the war, he wasn't doing very well. He rodethe freight trains, hopping on and off, for a couple of years, thenended up in Seattle," said Katie Hinde, 28. He met his wife on a visit back to Ohio. Jim and Janet Hinde weremarried for 29 years. "He was an amazing father, he never turned to drugs or alcohol, hewas the rock of our family," she said. "He took being a father very, very seriously." The family was preparing to celebrate their daughter's graduationfrom UCLA, with a doctorate in anthropology. They also have a son,Nate, 24, an artist and poet. When the family was young, Jim Hinde worked as an advertisingexecutive in Bellevue and later sold cars. He wrote songs for fun and performed on weekends at neighborhoodpubs. In 1989, he started playing part time at Pike Place Market. A yearlater, he decided he could make it work full time. "He wrote a really good body of work; he quickly became a veryimpressive artist," said Jim Page, his friend of 20 years. "He would show up at the Market at 8 a.m. and start playing in themorning. He played three sets a day. He treated it like a job, andhe did it impeccably," Page said. Hinde recently produced a CD, "Shout Down the Wind," and won aNorthwest Regional Emmy Award for the PBS documentary "Pike PlaceMarket: Soul of a City," which he co-wrote and hosted. Hinde was a one of the founding members of the Pike Place MarketBuskers Guild. He was helping organize the Vietnam Veterans ofAmerica national convention in Seattle later this month. The body is made from a seamless polyurethane-coated Lycra fabricstretched over a moveable aluminum frame allowing the owner tochange the car's shape. Purely conceptual, there is no intention ofthis technology ever going into production. Chris Bangle, head of design for BMW, says GINA allowed his team to"challenge existing principles and conventional processes." "It is in the nature of such visions that they do not necessarilyclaim to be suitable for series production," company officials saidin unveiling the car Tuesday. "Rather, they are intended to steercreativity and research into new directions." GINA (Geometry and functions In 'N' Adaptions) has been indevelopment for six years, the working model is built on a Z8chassis and has four panels which take about two hours to put on.

Tag: fruit jam Healthy is cool at Northland schools such as Whangarei's TikipungaPrimary, which runs a host of programmes to make sure pupils arehappy and fit. It's an "Active School", supported by Sport Northland, andhaspupil-led activities at lunchtime such as Jump Jam aerobics. It's also part of the Health Ministry's Fruit in Schools programme, promotes sun safety, has the children brushing their teeth everyday and offers walking-school buses. The teachers role-model healthy behaviour by wearing hats, drinkingwater and eating well. Tikipunga has also just applied to join the KidsCan programme, which funds raincoats for children who otherwise would come toschool in bad weather soaking wet, or just stay home. Health teacher Maureen Toki says it "just makes sense" for a schoolto want the best for its pupils. "I think we've just got to look at the needs of our pupils andaddress them as best we can," she said. "I think our current programmes fill those needs but we'll alwayslook at what else we can work with." The Fruit in Schools scheme makes sure each pupil gets one or twopieces of fruit a day. "Fruit is pretty expensive now and often thechildren get something like a nectarine or kiwifruit, which many ofthem have never had before," Mrs Toki said. Since the schoolstarted promoting healthy lifestyles, fewer pupils were buying pieson the way to school and more were taking part in organised sportoutside school, Mrs Toki said.

The whiff of the sea air from the cuisine intermingled

Tag: Seasoning Sauce The whiff of the sea air, aroma of the fields and the fragrancesfrom the cuisine intermingled, releasing the many flavours of Jamaica at Eric 'Busha' Clarke's crab party at Paradise Park,Savanna-la-Mar, in Westmoreland, last Saturday evening. The crab party culinary team, led by 'crab chef' extraordinaire,Brian HoSue, created heaven on Earth with a lip-smacking carte du jour of crab in black-bean sauce, crab rundown, garlic, curried andboiled crab. With this delightful fare, there was mouth-wateringspare ribs, conch, roasted and boiled corn. The art of cooking the eight- legged omnivores has been observed bythe Clarke family since the 1950s. Once again, Busha Clarke hit the jackpot, this time by serving over200 dozen (2,400) black, blue and red female and male crabs. And itwas not as if they (the crab) did not try to escape theirinevitable fate by climbing up the sides of the buckets they werehoused in, but any success was thwarted by anxious crustaceanlovers who devoured them heartily. As if that was not enough, Busha's creative juices inspired him totitillate the taste buds with Chinese sweets marinated in Tequila. With tables laid beneath cotton trees and bonfires adding someromantic touches, the tradition lived on. The hundreds of patrons who came from near and far for this annualritual were more than satisfied with premium liquor, exciting fruitdrinks and flavourful concoctions. Add that to good music, laughter and great conversation, and theconsensus is, Eric 'Busha' Clarke and his team did it again.

Freezer Aisles Try To Match Ice Cream Truck

Rice Protein Concentrate The variety was dizzying. Just looking at all the stickers, signsand placards plastered to the side of your average independent icecream purveyor could give you a heck of a headache. These days, ice cream trucks are still around, although they're abit harder to find. With the price of gas what it is, it's a safebet prices will be blowing up faster than the waistlines offrequent customers. Of course, if the prices get too high, you canalways just go to the grocery store. Unless you have kids, you probably haven't looked lately at thesection of the frozen desserts case where the Hard Ice Cream Machine noveltiesare sold. Almost everything you used to get from that rovingpurveyor of quiescently frozen confections is now available inconvenient multi-packs. Best of all, a six-pack will cost you aboutthe same as two from the ice cream man. Even Good Humor has made it to the freezer case, but more on thatlater. In this test, five adults tested each ice cream treat, awardingeach one 1 to 20 points. Each entry was judged on flavor, appearance and overall impression. Don't think of the ratings ascompetitive, as we weren't rating them in comparison to each other.Where two similar novelties were tasted, such as with the Drumstickand the Blue Bunny Champ cone, they were not tested in sequence. Breyer's Mrs. Field's Chocolate Chip Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich : 190 calories, 8 grams fat, 10 mg cholesterol, 125 mg sodium, 29grams carbs. Mrs. Field's cookies are great when you get them warm from a mallshop, but they don't quite make the transition to the freezersuccessfully. They were very hard to bite through, causing the icecream to squeeze out everywhere. The ice cream itself was verynondescript, with good creaminess but not much vanilla flavor.Final score: 76. Snickers Ice Cream Bar : 160 calories, 8 grams fat, 5 mg cholesterol, 55 mg sodium, 21grams total carbs. There have been numerous attempts over the years to translate candybars into ice cream form, with varying degrees of success. TheSnickers bar does the best job of mimicking its non-frozenoriginal, with good caramel and roasted peanuts. The only down notewas that some of the testers found the bar too heavily sweetoverall. Final score: 83. The Original Drumstick : 340 calories, 21 grams fat, 20 mg cholesterol, 90 mg sodium, 33grams carbs. This is the treat that's expanded American waistlines for years, and it's still the real deal. As ever, most of the nuts embedded inthe chocolate coating come off in the wrapper, and as ever the bestbite is the last one, when you get the chocolate glob at the bottomof the cone. The chocolate flavor wasn't quite as top-notch as someof the other treats, but this one still notched a final score of93. Eskimo Pie Dark Chocolate Bar : 160 calories, 11 grams fat, 15 mg cholesterol, 35 mg sodium, 14grams carbs. Eskimo Pie is one of the iconic names in the frozen treat business, which makes this treat a bit puzzling. The "dark" chocolate waswaxy, with very little actual chocolate flavor. The ice cream hadgreat texture, but not much in the way of any identifying taste ofits own. Final score: 65. Original Klondike Bar : 250 calories, 17 grams fat, 20 mg cholesterol, 55 mg sodium, 22grams carbs. As the old commercial goes, "What would you do for a Klondike bar?"Well, in this case, the testers would pass up several of the otherofferings in the test for this simple-but-good confection. The icecream is excellent, and the chocolate coating is very tasty. Theonly real problem is mechanical: It's almost impossible to finishone without the last few bites dribbling all over your hands. Finalscore: 91. Molli-Cool Chocolate Fusion : 130 calories, 7 grams fat, 20 mg cholesterol, 60 mg sodium, 12grams carbs.
